Free Resources

  •  Nonfiction: All nonfiction books and a few nonfiction DVDs are free to borrow. We also have documentaries on DVD, but there is a charge for these.
  •  Large print books: We have a wide range of fiction and nonfiction titles which is always growing, so keep checking the catalogue. We also have a video magnifier for those hard-to-read items.
  •  Local history collection: Although many of these titles are now out of print and so can only be read in the library, we also have a good range of titles that can be borrowed.
  •  New Zealand titles: New Zealand fiction is coming of age! Enjoy the best of local talent for free.
  • Archives: The council only archives transactional information such as rate books, council minutes and ledgers. If you are happy to do your own research, you can request an item from council archives. There is an index of archives available which is also searchable through the website. If you wish us to research for you, there is a cost. (See below). If your research is about families and personal history, you may find something in our local history collection, or you could contact the Westport History and Genealogy Group. • Reference books: These are materials which are rare, fragile, or needed all the time in the library, so we don’t generally allow them to be issued. However, some materials may be able to be issued for a limited time of three days. Also available are local and national government annual reports, surveys and statistics.
  • Current electoral rolls and telephone books: These are kept in the library for you to browse but cannot be removed.
  • Talking books: We receive talking books from National Library every two months and there are also a few items from the circulating West Coast Libraries Collection. For those long driving stints or that boring housework, nothing helps the time to flash by like a rattling good yarn. Available as CDs or Tapes.
  • Topographical maps – these are not for issue.
  • Pamphlets and brochures to take away: Everything from university calendars to health agencies.
  • Community noticeboard: For non-profit…
  • Council notices, local submission forms and information, and meeting agendas.
  • Petitions…..

Resources for which there is a charge

We also have a rental collection of bestsellers - if you want to read the latest bestseller without having to wait.

You can check your record, renew an item or place a hold online. You will need your library barcode and PIN number. You can select a PIN number any time – just ask at the library.
