16 February 2012 - Council awards tender for building demolition
Buller District Council is pleased to announce that a tender has been awarded to WestReef Services Limited for the demolition of the building known as Holland Hall, Westport Community Centre, or Westport Main School. Once the building is demolished WestReef Services will also redesign the site so it will be made into car parking.
“The contract was awarded to WestReef Services at a price of $205,000. This is less than the amount Council staff had budgeted which is great” comments Mayor Pat McManus. Work will begin on this project has soon as the Building Consent has been issued. The first stage in this process will be taking the roof off followed by the walls.
As the building is listed as a Category 2 Historic Place, Council has engaged the services of an archaeologist to assess some stages of the demolition. The archaeologist will be monitoring removal of foundations an the subsurface work to ensure there is nothing of significance under the building, and if there is that it is recorded and processed according to Historic Places Trust requirements.
We want to make this area look attractive so included in the plans of creating car parking is landscaping that sees the plantation of trees and greenery. Council is trying to create greener spaces throughout the urban areas of Buller so we can reflect the beautiful environment that we boast everyday.
It is envisaged that this project will take two months to be completed. Users of this thoroughfare may experience some delays or have restricted access at points of the project, Council apologizes for any inconvenience and appreciates your patience as this work is completed.
